Last night, Sharmistha, a fourth-year law student from Pune’s Symbiosis Institute, was arrested by Kolkata police in Delhi without prior notice for alleged hate speech against the founder of Islam.
Her crime? Responding with frustration, admittedly with foul language, to a Pakistani troll questioning India’s Operation Sindoor. Despite deleting her video and issuing a public apology, Sharmistha now faces the wrath of a system that seems to prioritise mob outrage over fairness.
What is Section 295A? This colonial-era law, enacted in 1927 after the Rangila Rasool case, criminalises “deliberate and malicious acts” intended to outrage religious feelings, with up to three years imprisonment. It’s often invoked alongside Section 153A (promoting enmity) and Section 505 (public mischief), but its vague wording makes it a tool for silencing dissent, from political satire to social media posts. The Supreme Court has clarified that only acts with malicious intent disrupting public order should apply, yet arrests like Sharmistha’s show its misuse.
We’ve seen this before. Nupur Sharma, a BJP spokesperson, faced global backlash and death threats for comments on the Prophet, amplified by influencers like Zubair, who weaponised social media to fuel outrage. Yati Narsinghanand, charged for hate speech, was targeted under the same laws, with his case escalating after viral clips sparked mob demands. Both faced severe consequences, careers derailed, lives threatened, showing how it can be a blunt instrument against free speech.
Sharmistha’s case is even more alarming. A young student, she apologised for her remarks, yet faced relentless death and rape threats, with #ArrestSharmishta trending on X. AIMIM’s Waris Pathan publicly demanded action, inciting a “sar tan se juda” mob that pressured her arrest.
Unlike high-profile figures, Sharmistha lacks the resources to fight back. Her late-night detention without notice raises questions about due process and selective enforcement.
2025.5.31 Mamata’s police arrests Sharmistha for replying to Pakistani trolls on Operation Sindoor
That a Pakistani troll’s provocation led to an Indian citizen’s arrest is a disturbing commentary on whose sensitivities are being prioritised in India today

Last night, Sharmistha, a fourth-year law student from Pune’s Symbiosis Institute, was arrested by Kolkata police in Delhi without prior notice for alleged hate speech against the founder of Islam.
New Delhi: In a move raising serious concerns about selective policing and suppression of speech, Kolkata Police on Friday arrested Sharmistha Panoli, a fourth-year law student from Pune’s Symbiosis Institute, from her Gurugram residence without prior notice.
Her arrest stems from a now-deleted social media video in which she allegedly made derogatory remarks about the founder of Islam, remarks she had already apologised for.
The context? A Pakistani troll had mocked India’s Operation Sindoor, prompting her to respond.
Prominent social media voice Subhi Vishwakarma exposed the arrest in a scathing post, calling it an overreach and warning of its wider implications.
“Last night, Sharmistha… was arrested by Kolkata police in Delhi without prior notice… Her crime? Responding with frustration, admittedly with foul language, to a Pakistani troll questioning India’s Operation Sindoor,” she wrote.
She noted she had deleted the video and issued a public apology, but that did not stop her from being targeted and arrested.
At the centre of this controversy is the continued misuse of Section 295A of the IPC, an archaic colonial law that criminalises “deliberate and malicious acts” intended to outrage religious feelings.
While the Supreme Court has clarified that the section should apply only when there is clear malicious intent that disrupts public order, authorities continue to invoke it to appease social media mobs and pressure groups.
The arrest draws chilling parallels with past instances of similar overreach, particularly the case of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who also faced criminal proceedings, death threats, and political isolation for her comments on the Prophet in 2022.
In Sharmistha’s case, it was not just trolls but even AIMIM leader Waris Pathan who publicly called for her arrest, fuelling the online #ArrestSharmishta campaign and triggering rape and death threats against the young woman.
What makes the episode even more disturbing is the sheer disparity in treatment. Unlike Sharma, who had political backing and legal support, Sharmistha is a student with limited resources.
Her arrest was not only abrupt but also procedurally questionable, no notice, no warning, no legal aid at the time of detention.
The fact that Kolkata Police, working under Mamata Banerjee’s government, acted so swiftly under social media pressure raises uncomfortable questions about free speech and due process in the country.
Is the state selectively cracking down on individuals to cater to communal sentiments and suppress dissenting voices?
Sharmistha is scheduled to appear before a Kolkata court on May 31, 2025. Her legal team is expected to challenge the procedural irregularities and fight for her release.
RSS veteran Ratan Sharda reacted strongly to the development, drawing direct parallels with the treatment of Nupur Sharma. “Another victim of truth like @NupurSharmaBJP? Where will this episode end? I am apprehensive,” Sharda posted, echoing a rising concern that the space for rational, even if impassioned, speech is rapidly shrinking.
Importantly, Sharmistha’s remarks were not made in a vacuum, they came in direct response to a Pakistani provocation following Operation Sindoor, a precision strike launched by the Indian Armed Forces on May 7, 2025.
The operation had targeted terrorist bases in Bahawalpur and Muridke, decimating key infrastructure of groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba after the Pahalgam terror attack.
That a Pakistani troll’s provocation led to an Indian citizen’s arrest is a disturbing commentary on whose sensitivities are being prioritised in India today.
2025.5.30 Ankita Bhandari Story: She Refused To “Serve” VIPs. They Threw Her In Canal
Ankita Bhandari, a resident of Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, had joined Vanantra Resort in Yamkeshwar as a receptionist in August 2022. Less than a month into her job, she was dead.

New Delhi: The report of a missing 19-year-old receptionist at a remote Uttarakhand resort came in as just another entry in a local police station on September 18, 2022. Within days, however, the matter escalated far beyond a routine search for a young woman. The teenager’s body was pulled from a canal near Rishikesh, and three men, including the resort’s owner, were arrested.
What followed was a sequence of events that drew national attention, sparked political fallout, and exposed disturbing details about the accused and their circle of crime.
A Night In Yamkeshwar
Ankita Bhandari, a resident of Dobh-Srikot village in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, had joined Vanantra Resort in Yamkeshwar as a receptionist in August 2022. Less than a month into her job, she was dead. According to the police, on the night of September 18 that year, an altercation occurred between Ankita and her employer, Pulkit Arya, the son of a senior BJP leader, along with his two staff members, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta.
Following a heated confrontation, Ankita was allegedly forced into a vehicle and later pushed into the fast-flowing Cheela canal, a man-made irrigation channel known for its dangerous currents.
Arya and his aides then returned to the resort, located around 10 km from Rishikesh, then filed a missing person complaint himself.
Loopholes And Delayed Action
The initial investigation into Ankita’s disappearance was marred by confusion. The Vanantra Resort is located in a semi-rural area outside the jurisdiction of regular police. Responsibility fell upon a revenue police officer or a “patwari”, whose authority and investigative capacity were limited.
The lapse delayed crucial early actions. It wasn’t until three days later, under public pressure and mounting suspicions from Ankita’s family and friends, that the case was transferred to the regular police. By then, public anger had grown.
State Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar admitted the absence of immediate police action may have cost the investigation precious time. “The area where this resort, Vanantra, is located doesn’t fall under regular police. We have a system of patwari (land revenue official) registering FIRs in such areas. He did register a ‘missing person’ FIR, filed by the resort owner himself,” he said.
Friends Raise Alarm
Ankita’s disappearance first became known to her close friend Pushp, who recounted that she had called him on the night of September 18. According to their conversation, she had been pressured by resort management to provide what were euphemistically referred to as “special services” to guests, an allegation that later became central to the motive behind the murder.
That night, after 8:30 pm, Ankita’s phone became unreachable. Pushp attempted to contact Pulkit Arya directly. Arya responded that Ankita had retired to her room. The next morning, Arya’s phone, too, was switched off. Later, other staff members gave contradictory answers. The manager said Ankita was in the gym. The chef said he hadn’t seen her.
Sensing something was seriously wrong, Pushp and Ankita’s family contacted police again, this time urging them to treat it as a potential crime. When the police finally intervened, events moved quickly.
Body Recovered, Protests Begin
On September 24, six days after she was last seen, Ankita’s body was retrieved from the Cheela canal. The post-mortem, conducted at AIIMS Rishikesh, confirmed drowning as the cause of death. But it also revealed multiple injuries-blunt force trauma consistent with physical assault. Her viscera samples, tested for signs of sexual assault, returned negative results.
Public outrage boiled over. Locals attacked the police vehicle transporting the accused, breaking windows and attempting to pull them out. In Bhogpur, villagers vandalised the resort, accusing the administration of shielding the accused due to Arya’s political connections. Overnight, authorities bulldozed the resort, declaring it illegal.
Political Repercussions
Pulkit Arya’s father, Vinod Arya, was a senior member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand. Following the revelations, he was expelled from the party. Still, he publicly defended his son, referring to him as a “simple boy” who wouldn’t commit such a crime. “Seedha sadha balak hai (he is a simple boy). He is only concerned about his work. I want justice for both my son Pulkit and Ankita Bhandari, ” Mr Arya said, drawing sharp criticism.
Vinod Arya himself was later named in another case by his former driver, who accused him of physical assault and attempted sodomy.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the case would be tried in a fast-track court. The state government also appointed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior IPS officer Renuka Devi. A compensation of Rs 25 lakh was announced for Ankita’s family.
The Body, The Funeral, and Questions
Ankita’s mother later alleged that the family had been tricked into staying away from her funeral. In a video that surfaced weeks later, Ankita’s mother is seen inside a hospital, claiming she had been forcibly taken there under the pretext of being allowed to see her daughter’s body. She claimed she was given intravenous fluids against her will and not permitted to attend the cremation.
“They took my husband along forcibly, but didn’t take me. They brought me here from the forest where I live, saying I will see my daughter,” the mother could be heard complaining in the video.
“Doctors then put me in a wheelchair. I asked why was it needed but they took me to a hospital. They then forcibly put me on intravenous sugar solution and started recording a video,” she said.
She said four or five people had come to her and said they would take her to the cremation site. “I said I am her mother, I won’t do anything until I see her. I said I won’t budge until you show me my daughter. I wasn’t unwell at all. They tricked me into coming here. I was sitting at the civic body’s office. This is just for show, they have betrayed us,” she said.
Audio Clips
Perhaps the most damning evidence against Pulkit Arya came in the form of two audio recordings between him and Ankita’s close friend, Pushp. In the two audio clips, Arya can be heard attempting to manipulate Ankita’s friend Pushp, even suggesting she was “probably with him.”
In the first audio clip, Pushp can be heard asking Pulkit, “Last night, why did she [the victim] take your phone?” To that, Pulkit replied, “Her phone had run out of battery and there was no need for me to keep my phone for the night. So I gave it to her when she asked for it.”
Pushp then told Pulkit, “So, she did have a phone last night. Yet, it’s surprising that she never contacted me. In fact, I called her thrice, but her phone was switched off.”
The investigators later suspected that Arya had hoped Ankita’s body would never be found. If she remained missing indefinitely, he may have anticipated that suspicion would naturally fall on Pushp, with whom Ankita had communicated frequently. Her phone, investigators believed then, was deliberately disposed of, either dumped in the canal or destroyed to hide evidence.
Charge Sheet And The Trial
The police submitted a 500-page charge sheet within 90 days, as per the mandated timeline for fast-track proceedings. Over 100 individuals were interviewed, including resort employees, digital forensic experts, and friends of Ankita. Forty-seven of these were presented in court.
The prosecution argued that Ankita was targeted because she resisted Arya’s alleged attempts to push her into prostitution, a claim supported by chats, audio recordings, and witness testimony.
The final arguments concluded on May 19, 2025. The verdict was pronounced on May 30. Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar, and Ankit Gupta were all convicted of murder.
2025.5.28 Anna University sexual assault case: Lone accused Gnanasekar convicted
The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on June 2

Pronouncing the verdict in the case involving the sexual assault of a student from Anna University in December 2024, the Mahila Court in Chennai on Wednesday (May 28, 2025) convicted the lone accused, Gnanasekar, 37, after finding him guilty of the offences he was charged with. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on June 2.
Earlier on Wednesday, Gnanasekar was brought in a police van from the Central Prison, Puzhal amidst tight security, to the Madras High Court campus, where the trial court is located. He was produced before Mahila Court judge M. Rajalakshmi.
The judge read out the judgment, holding him guilty of offences he was charged under 11 sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Information Technology Act, and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act. The judge said the quantum of punishment would be pronounced on June 2.
Prosecution’s case
The prosecution said the incident occurred on December 23, 2024, when the survivor, a 19-year-old student, and her friend were out on the Anna University campus.
Gnanasekar lived with his family at Kottur and and ran a roadside biryani outlet on the service road near Adyar Bridge. He was already involved in several criminal activities.
At 7.10 p.m. on December 23, 2024, he entered Anna University via the Madras University campus, and set his mobile phone on flight mode. While getting in, he pretended to speak to someone over the phone, though there was evidence that the device was already on flight mode.
At 7.45 p.m., he spotted the student and her friend seated on the stairs of a building on the campus. Gnanasekar hit her friend on the head and snatched the woman’s identity card. He threatened the duo, saying he had shot a video of them and that he would show it to the dean, warden, and other staff members of the university. He also threatened to get the authorities to issue a transfer certificate based on the video.
As they pleaded with him to leave them alone, he asked the woman to stay where she was and took her friend aside. A few minutes later, he returned and told her that her friend had been caught by the university staff. He then asked her to leave her phone on flight mode, took her to a secluded spot, and sexually assaulted her. He also videographed the act on his phone, according to the charge sheet.
The Madras High Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising women officers, had probed the sexual assault case, which had sparked massive outrage in the State, and had named history-sheeter Gnanasekar as the lone accused.
Gnanasekar was charged under 11 provisions of the law, including Sections 331(6) (lurking trespass by night), 126(2) (wrongfully restraining any person), 140(4) (kidnapping in order to subject a person to grievous hurt), 75(2) (sexual harassment) read with 64(1) (rape), among other provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technolgy Act, and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act.

Mumbai: In a shocking crime of passion, a 36-year-old man was brutally murdered in the Bengali Pura area of Antop Hill, allegedly by his wife and her lover. The deceased has been identified as Ismail Ali Jamal Ali Shaikh (36). Antop Hill police have arrested his wife, Sumaya Shaikh (26), and her paramour, Jabbar Shaikh, for the crime.
According to police officials, Ismail had discovered the extramarital affair between his wife and Jabbar, leading to a heated argument between the couple on Monday night. Around 3 a.m., in the heat of the altercation, Sumaya called Jabbar to their home. In a calculated move, she reportedly held her husband’s legs while Jabbar used a sharp weapon to stab Ismail multiple times in the neck. Sumaya then used a kitchen knife to stab him further, police said.
After the murder, Sumaya dragged her husband’s blood-soaked body outside the house and attempted to mislead the police by claiming that someone else had killed him. 2025.5.26 Chennai police bust gang from Uttar Pradesh involved in tampering with ATMs, stealing cash
The gang places a black carboard material inside the cash dispenser; after disappointed customers leave the ATM without getting their money, the gang members, pretending to be ordinary customers, enter the kiosk and steal the cash stuck inside the dispenser

The Thiruvanmiyur police, of the Greater Chennai City Police (GCP), have busted a gang from Uttar Pradesh suspected of using an unusual technique to carry out ATM thefts across several locations in Tamil Nadu. Three men have been arrested.
Sources in the police said a customer visited a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM at Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, on Saturday (May 24, 2025) night, and attempted to withdraw ₹1,500. Though he received a text message stating money was debited from his account, the machine did not dispense any cash. The customer then raised a complaint with the bank and left the spot.
Several other customers too experienced the same issue until next morning. Most of them left the ATM assuming the debit would be auto-reversed.
This issue came to the notice of Thiruvanmiyur police, and they called the bank staff on Sunday (May 25) morning. Officials of the SBI in Mumbai, in turn, called a representative of the Hitachi ATM service to check the machine.
K. Naren Kumar, of the Hitachi ATM service, visited the spot and found that the cash dispenser was blocked from the inside using a black-coloured cardboard material. Based on his complaint, the police registered a case and launched an investigation. Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun formed two special teams to trace those involved in tampering with the ATM.
The special teams analysed the call records of a few suspects and combed through CCTV footage. The police arrested three suspects — Kuldeep Singh, 26, Brijbhan, 30, and Sumit Yadav, 33, of Uttar Pradesh — under the Thiruvanmiyur police limits. No customer has lost any money from the ATM in Thiruvanmiyur, and there was only an attempt to steal cash, the police confirmed.
Modus operandi
However, the gang has been involved in other such thefts across the city, the police said. Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, a senior police officer said they open an ATM using a key of their own and stick a black cardboard inside the cash dispenser, before locking it up and hiding somewhere nearby. After disappointed customers leave the ATM without getting their money, the gang members, pretending to be ordinary customers, enter the kiosk and steal the cash stuck inside the dispenser.
The police officer said the gang had been operating in the city for the past three months. They have struck ATMs in Vandalur, Chennai city, and surrounding areas. Each time, they have managed to escape with the stolen cash; they take taxis to railway stations and then trains to their hometowns in Uttar Pradesh.
The police said the quantum of money lost from the ATMs has still not been ascertained, as no complaint has been received so far. Further investigation is under way to determine whether others are part of the gang.
The police seized a key used for the ATM theft, the black cardboard material, and double-sided tapes from the accused.

2025.5.25 Jyoti Malhotra was in constant touch with Pakistani YouTubers, travel vlogger’s mobile phone data reveals
Jyoti Malhotra case: Intelligence agencies are looking into details whether Zeeshan was present during Jyoti’s meeting with two Pakistani operatives, which was arranged through Ali Hasan.

New Delhi: A major revelation has come to light regarding Jyoti Malhotra, a YouTuber and travel vlogger from Haryana’s Hisar, who was arrested on charges of espionage by intelligence agencies and security forces. The data from Jyoti Malhotra’s mobile phone indicates that she was in regular touch with Zeeshan Hussain, a well-known YouTuber from Pakistan. Jyoti was reportedly working with Zeeshan to portray a positive image of Pakistan and run propaganda.
She was also in touch with several other Pakistani YouTubers in addition to Zeeshan. Around two months ago, when Jyoti Malhotra visited Pakistan on a religious visa, she messaged Zeeshan, who came to meet her at the Katasraj Temple.
Both uploaded videos on their respective YouTube channels praising Pakistan. They tried to showcase that Pakistan takes good care of ancient temples and Hindus, whereas the reality of how Hindus and their temples are treated in Pakistan is well known globally.
In one of his videos, Zeeshan referred to Jyoti Malhotra as not just an ambassador of India but also of Pakistan, stating that she was posing a positive image of Pakistan in India. Zeeshan is a popular YouTuber from Lahore. Authorities are investigating whether Jyoti shared any information about the Attari Wagah border or border deployment with him.
They are also looking into details whether Zeeshan was present during Jyoti’s meeting with two Pakistani operatives, which was arranged through Ali Hasan. There is suspicion that Jyoti Malhotra, in collaboration with Zeeshan, was passing sensitive information to Pakistan’s intelligence agency and its operatives.
Madhya Pradesh Police grills YouTuber Jyoti on her Mahakal Temple visit
A Madhya Pradesh police team grilled YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, arrested on suspicion of espionage, in Haryana after it came to light she visited the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, but nothing incriminating came out during the questioning. The 33-year-old content creator and social media influencer is currently in the custody of police in Hisar, Haryana.
Malhotra was among the 12 people arrested from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over the past two weeks on suspicion of espionage, with investigators suspecting the presence of a Pakistan-linked spy network operating in north India A team of five Madhya Pradesh cops went to Haryana to grill her after getting information that she had visited the famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the ancient holy city of Ujjain in April last year.
The team grilled her but nothing incriminating or suspicious about her visit to the temple has come out, Ujjain Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nitesh Bhargava told media over the phone. “The team is scheduled to return tonight (Friday) or by tomorrow (Saturday). The team was sent four days ago,” he said.
Hisar-based Malhotra, who ran a YouTube channel titled ‘Travel with JO’, was arrested from the New Aggarsain Extension on May 16. She was booked under the relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and the BNS, according to police. The YouTuber had put out photos and videos (on different social media platforms) and police had information that she came to Mahakal Temple for darshan in April last year, said the officer.
“The place is very sensitive and sees a huge number of footfalls daily, including devotees from overseas. So it was important to grill her. We took suo motu (on its own motion) action to send a team to Hisar (where she is being grilled by different agencies),” he added.
She stood in the queue like common devotees and had the darshan of the deity, the ASP said. “We have not got any suspicious things (in connection to her Ujjain visit) as of now. It (questioning) was just our precautionary exercise. What was the harm in it?,” Bhargava asked.

The officer further said a day later, on the morning of May 22, the decomposed body of a man was discovered in the forest near Maidangarhi Talab. The body was later identified as that of Mahto. A case of murder was registered and an investigation was launched.
During the probe, police discovered that Mahto was allegedly involved in an affair with the wife of Sushil Kumar (37), who is the maternal uncle of Naveen Kumar, the relative with whom the deceased was staying in Delhi.
The affair had reportedly begun two years ago when Mahto and the woman met at a family wedding in Bihar, said the Additional DCP.
“On May 18, Sushil Kumar allegedly found multiple missed calls from Mahto on his wife’s phone and confronted her. Upon learning of the affair, he planned the murder and convinced his wife (24) to help. She called Mahto and arranged a meeting near the Maidangarhi forest area,” he added.
Police said when Mahto arrived, Sushil Kumar, who was hiding, attacked him from behind with an iron rod, killing him on the spot. The couple then dumped the body in the bushes, took his phone and cheque book and fled the scene, police said.
Following technical surveillance and analysis of CCTV footage, a team zeroed in on the couple and apprehended them, they said.
“During interrogation, both the accused confessed to the crime. Police recovered the broken mobile phone and cheque book of the deceased, the blood-stained iron rod used as the murder weapon and the clothes worn by the accused during the crime,” he said.
Sushil Kumar, a labourer, has been living in Delhi for the last 17 years. He and his wife hail from village Bhalhi in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district. Further investigation is underway, police said.

2025.5.22 Lucknow: Man found dead with injury marks on neck at married lover’s house
Arpit was found unconscious at Suman’s residence with marks around his neck, fuelling suspicion of either suicide or strangulation.
A 21-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his married girlfriend’s house in Lucknow’s Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday night. The incident, which has raised suspicion of foul play, led to protests in the area, with the victim’s family demanding immediate police action.
The man was identified as Arpit, a resident of Farrukhabad Chillawan who had been in a two-year romantic relationship with Suman Maurya, a married woman from Azad Nagar.
Arpit owned a plot near Suman’s house where he kept cows and visited daily to feed them and meet her.
On Tuesday evening, Arpit’s uncle alerted his family that he was found unconscious at Suman’s residence. He was rushed to Lokbandhu Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The authorities stated that marks on Arpit’s neck have fuelled speculation of either suicide or strangulation.
Initial reports suggested that Arpit and Suman consumed poison, but Suman later clarified that no such incident occurred. She claimed Arpit, frustrated by her refusal to elope, hanged himself.
Suman stated she called a neighbour to help, but fainted during the ordeal. She and her husband, Chhotu Maurya (alias Rajkumar), then fled, locking their house.
Arpit’s family, suspecting murder, accused Suman, her husband, and their family. A police case was filed at the Sarojini Nagar station, with Suman detained for questioning.
Meanwhile, frustrated by delays in police action, relatives and villagers blocked the Kanpur Road near the Amausi Metro Station for 20 minutes on Wednesday evening, dispersing only after assurances from authorities.

2025.5.21 Elderly couple in Bengaluru falls fo digital arrest threat, loses Rs 4.7 crore
Bengaluru: In the latest incident of fraud over so-called digital arrest, an elderly couple in the city was victimised, losing Rs 4.7 crore in the process.
Fraudsters forced the couple to remain stuck at home for almost two months until police came to their rescue.
The victim, Karthik, 77, (name changed), a resident of J P Nagar and who had worked in private firms in India and abroad, said in his complaint that he and his 75-year-old wife were subjected to digital arrest from March 19 to May 15.
On March 19, impersonating a State Bank of India (SBI) staff member, one of the fraudsters called Karthik and told him his credit card had been used for money laundering, though Karthik didn’t even have a card.
Karthik then received a video call purportedly from a CBI officer, who told him a case had been registered against him, and he would need to appear at the CBI office in either Mumbai or Delhi.
Karthik and his wife were then told they were under digital arrest and threatened with arrest if they spoke to anyone about it. They were not even allowed to communicate with their children.
The fraudsters claimed the Supreme Court had issued an arrest warrant against them, in keeping with RBI guidelines. Karthik was then told to transfer money from his bank account to two accounts, details of which were provided to him. The fraudsters also displayed fake court documents and ID cards to convince Karthik.
A senior police officer said acting on a tip-off, they traced the couple’s address, rescued them, and a case was registered under the Information Technology Act and various sections of BNS.

Delhi crime branch nabs ayurvedic doctor convicted of multiple murders from Rajasthan ashram
Delhi Crime Branch arrests notorious serial killer ‘Doctor Death’ Devender Sharma from Rajasthan ashram after parole jump and decades of gruesome crimes.
New Delhi: The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has apprehended one of India’s most notorious serial killers, Dr. Devender Sharma, also known as ‘Doctor Death,’ who had been on the run since jumping parole in August 2023. The 67-year-old Ayurveda practitioner turned criminal mastermind was arrested from an ashram in Dausa, Rajasthan, where he had been living under a false identity, posing as a priest.
Sharma, a resident of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was serving multiple life sentences for his involvement in at least 21 cases of kidnapping and murder of truck and taxi drivers between 2002 and 2004. He was also convicted in a high-profile illegal kidney transplant racket, having facilitated over 125 transplants between 1998 and 2004.
Sharma was granted parole in June 2023 in connection with a 2004 murder case registered at Sarita Vihar Police Station in Delhi but failed to surrender after the parole period ended. This was not his first escape from the law—he previously jumped parole in 2020 and remained absconding for seven months.
Under the direction of senior officers, the R.K. Puram unit of the Crime Branch launched a dedicated operation to track him down. A team led by Inspector Rakesh Kumar and supervised by ACP Umesh Barthwal conducted a months-long search across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Intelligence gathered from informants eventually led the team to an ashram in Dausa, where Sharma was masquerading as a spiritual leader.
During interrogation, Sharma confessed to his crimes and admitted to deliberately avoiding a return to jail. His criminal history dates back to the 1990s when, after suffering financial losses, he began operating a fake gas agency and later got involved in the illegal organ trade with an associate named Dr Amit.
In addition to the murder of taxi drivers—whose bodies were often dumped in crocodile-infested canals in Uttar Pradesh—Sharma was convicted in 27 separate cases, including kidnapping and robbery. He was sentenced to death in one of the murder cases by a Gurgaon court.
He has now been handed over to jail authorities. His arrest ends yet another chapter in a long trail of gruesome crimes spanning over two decades.

2025.5.18 Jyoti Malhotra arrest: Military Intelligence, IB to interrogate YouTuber on suspicion of spying for Pakistan
Jyoti Malhotra arrest: Jyoti’s YouTube channel account shows some videos regarding her visit to Pakistan- ‘Indian Girl in Pakistan’, ‘Indian Girl Exploring Lahore’, ‘Indian Girl at Katas Raj Temple’ and ‘Indian Girl Rides Luxury Bus in Pakistan’. She has made a total of 487 videos so far.

New Delhi: In addition to the Haryana Police, teams from the Military Intelligence and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) will interrogate travel vlogger and YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra. Jyoti’s mobile phone and other seized electronic gadgets will be sent for forensic examination. She was arrested by Haryana Police on suspicion of spying for Pakistan, was sent to five days of police remand by a local court. According to police, suspicious things were found after the police recovered her laptop and mobile. Additionally, the Deputy Superintendent of Hisar, Kamaljeet, said that the vlogger was in continuous contact with a Pakistani citizen.
Haryana Police is currently working on decoding several Pakistani numbers saved in Jyoti Malhotra’s mobile phone. Her travel history is also under scrutiny, including which Indian states she visited between 2023 and 2025, along with details of her trips to around eight foreign countries during the same period. The police will also investigate Jyoti Malhotra’s bank accounts.
There is ongoing questioning about her alleged meetings in Pakistan with individuals named-
Ali Ahwan
Shakir
Rana Shahbaz
Investigators are also trying to determine whether Jyoti had any accomplices who helped her pass classified Indian information to Danish. Additionally, the mobile phone data of other arrested suspects is being examined.
These people include-
Ghazala (from Punjab)
Yaseen Mohammad
Nomaan Ilahi (from UP’s Kairana)
26-year-old Armaan (arrested from Nuh)
25-year-old Devendra Singh Dhillon (arrested from Kaithal)
Authorities are probing whether all arrested suspects were connected to one another, or if Danish recruited them separately over time for espionage. Money trails involving UPI and other financial channels linked to the accused are also under investigation.
Interrogations have revealed that all communication with Danish- via phone calls, messages, and chats- was conducted using code names. The accused had saved Pakistani contacts in their phones under different code names.
Danish was in contact with several social media influencers in India. During the Pahalgam terror attack and the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, Jyoti remained in constant touch with Danish. Authorities are currently gathering information about who Jyoti met in Kashmir during her visits.
By infiltrating Indian social media influencers, Danish was attempting to improve Pakistan’s image on social media platforms, especially in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. Danish was using Jyoti as an asset.
All expenses for Jyoti’s trips to Pakistan were covered by Danish, who was posted at the Pakistan High Commission, and all of her tours to Pak were Pakistan-sponsored.
Kairana terror connection
Investigative agencies are especially focusing on Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, where Nomaan Ilahi- believed to be a major ISI operative- was arrested. Kairana’s Pakistani connection is being explored because several Muslim families residing there have relatives in Pakistan.
Sources suggest that some young men from Kairana currently serve as ISI handlers in Pakistan, including- Iqbal Kana, Dilshad Mirza, Hamida, and Shahid, who are believed to be involved in anti-national activities from across the border. Not only that, Shahid from Kairana is reportedly traveling to places like Dubai, Morocco, and Afghanistan as part of a mission to recruit new ISI agents.
In recent years, several young men from Kairana and nearby towns have been arrested on charges of working for Pakistan’s ISI. Last year (in 2024), Kaleem and his brother Tahseem from Shamli district were arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) for allegedly working as ISI agents and sharing sensitive information through WhatsApp and other social media platforms.
Sardar Ali, a resident of Kandhla, was arrested in 2023 for allegedly being an associate of Pakistani terrorist Waris, who himself was arrested in 2000 and is currently in prison.
On June 17, 2021, a parcel blast occurred at Darbhanga Railway Station in Bihar. While there were no casualties, the NIA raided locations in Kairana during the investigation and arrested Saleem Tuiyaan and Kafeel in connection with the blast. In 1995, Iqbal Kana, a resident of Kairana, was caught in Delhi with a consignment of 361 pistols. He later fled to Pakistan.

Rohtak: A tragic incident unfolded in the Majra village of Rohtak, Haryana, on Wednesday, May 13, where a father and his two sons lost their lives after falling into a clogged sewer outside their home. The chain of events began when the youngest son accidentally fell in while trying to open the manhole lid, prompting his father and brother to jump in after him, but none of them made it out alive.
The victims have been identified as Mahabir Singh, a retired Army jawan, and his sons Laxman and Deepak, both of whom were working in private jobs. According to the family, all three likely died from toxic gas inhalation in the sewer. The third son, Rajkumar, was about to go in to help but was stopped and told to call the police.
Tragic Chain Reaction Caught in Minutes
Santosh Devi, the mother of the deceased, told Dainik Bhaskar, “The drain outside our house was blocked. Laxman went to open the sewer lid and fell in. Mahabir saw this and climbed in to save him, but didn’t come out. Deepak also went in but couldn’t rescue them. All three died.”
According to Fireman Rohtas, their team received a call at 7:30 AM. Initially, two rescue workers were sent into the manhole but faced breathing difficulties. Another team member equipped with an oxygen cylinder finally managed to pull out the three bodies, but all were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Villagers Allege Negligence
Locals have blamed civic negligence for the tragedy. “The sewer has been clogged for a long time. Complaints to local councilors have gone unanswered,” said villager Manjeet, as quoted by Dainik Bhaskar. He demanded action against sewer contractor Anurag, holding him responsible for not maintaining the system.

The village remains in mourning as the family prepares for the funerals of three of its members.
2025.5.14 Ex-army man hacked to death, body chopped into six pieces by wife, lover in UP’s Ballia
The accused dumped the body parts in different locations to conceal the identity of the victim.
Ballia: Months after the man gruesome murder of a man by his wife and her lover in Meerut, another chilling case has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district- where a 44-year-old woman, with the help of her lover and two others, allegedly hacked her ex-army soldier husband into six pieces, police said on Tuesday.
Accused dumped the body parts in different locations
The incident came to light on Saturday when severed hands and legs, wrapped in polythene, were discovered in a field near Khareed village under the jurisdiction of Sikandarpur Police Station.
The accused reportedly dumped the body parts at different locations in an attempt to conceal the identity of the victim and mislead investigators.
The victim was later identified as Devendra Kumar, a 62-year-old retired Army personnel, police said.
Four people arrested
Maya Devi, his wife, initially attempted to mislead the investigation by lodging a missing person complaint on May 10 at the Ballia City Kotwali Police Station, claiming her husband was untraceable. However, the case took a dramatic turn when her own daughter, Ambli Gautam, came forward and testified against her, directly accusing Maya Devi of murdering her father.
Following the daughter’s statement, police booked Maya Devi under relevant sections for murder and placed her under arrest.
Ballia Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh informed reporters on Tuesday that Maya Devi had confessed to murdering her husband with the help of her lover, truck driver Anil Yadav, and two accomplices — Mithilesh Patel and Satish Yadav.
According to police, Mithilesh Patel was arrested on Monday, while Anil Yadav and Satish Yadav were apprehended on Tuesday.
How did they kill Devendra Kumar?
According to the police, the group murdered Devendra Kumar inside his residence in the Bahadurpur locality. After killing him, they dismembered the body into six parts — severing both arms, legs, and the head — before dumping the pieces in separate locations to prevent identification.
Acting on Maya Devi’s confession, police recovered the torso from a well in Khareed Darauli village.
On Tuesday, during a vehicle check near Town Polytechnic in Parikhara, police intercepted Anil Yadav and Satish Yadav. The duo opened fire on the police team, prompting retaliatory action in which Anil Yadav was shot in the leg. He is currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
From the spot, police recovered a country-made pistol, a spent cartridge, and a live round from Anil Yadav. Satish Yadav was found carrying the weapon allegedly used in the murder.
Singh said that Maya Devi masterminded the killing due to her illicit relationship with Anil Yadav.

The gruesome Ballia murder has sent fresh shockwaves through Uttar Pradesh, adding to a disturbing pattern of spousal killings that have emerged in the state in recent months.
In March, a chilling case from Meerut involved a former merchant navy officer who was murdered by his wife and her lover. The duo stuffed his body into a drum and filled it with cement to conceal the crime.
In April, a similarly horrifying incident came to light from Deoria, where a woman and her lover murdered her husband just ten days after his return from Dubai. They chopped his body in two and dumped the parts in a suitcase in a field. The body was identified through the airline tag still attached to the luggage.
In Auraiya, another case of betrayal surfaced last month. A newlywed man was murdered just 15 days into his marriage by his wife and her lover, who hired a contract killer to carry out the act.

2025.5.5 Kerala: 7-year-old girl, bitten by stray dog, dies of rabies despite timely vaccination
A seven-year-old girl from Kollam district in Kerala died of rabies at SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, despite receiving the full course of anti-rabies vaccination. The child, Niya, was bitten by a stray dog near her home on April 8 and was promptly treated at local health centres.
Thiruvananthapuram: A seven-year-old girl from Kollam district died of rabies at a government hospital in Kerala on Monday, despite having received the full course of anti-rabies vaccination, hospital authorities confirmed. The child, identified as Niya from Kunnicode, had been on ventilator support at the Sree Avittom Thirunal (SAT) Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram after testing positive for rabies. She succumbed to the infection early in the morning. Her death comes just days after a similar case in Malappuram, where a six-year-old girl also died of rabies despite being vaccinated.
Niya’s mother, inconsolable while shifting her daughter’s body from the hospital, said the attack took place near their home, where garbage is regularly dumped. “We kept pleading with people to stop throwing waste near our house. Stray dogs gather there. One of them mauled my daughter in front of my eyes,” she told reporters.
The family said the dog bit Niya on the elbow on April 8. Her wounds were promptly cleaned, and she was taken to the local family health centre where she received an anti-rabies shot. She was later shifted to the Punalur Taluk Hospital for further treatment, including additional doses of the vaccine.
Here’s how the tragedy occurred
Despite the timely medical attention, Niya developed pain and fever at the wound site last week, prompting her family to take her to the SAT Hospital. Doctors later confirmed rabies infection. Medical officials at SAT hospital said the virus may have directly entered the bloodstream if the bite landed on a vein, which can render the vaccine ineffective in rare cases.
Health Minister Veena George said only quality-verified vaccines are administered in Kerala’s government hospitals, and the incident would be investigated further.

2025.5.1 21-year-old Karnataka man drinks 5 bottles of neat liquor over Rs 10,000 bet, dies
The 21-year-old was then rushed to a hospital in Mulbagal in the state’s Kolar district but succumbed during treatment. Karthik who had gotten married a year back, leaves behind his eight-day-old child.
Bengaluru: In Karnataka a shocking incident came to light after a 21-year-old youth died over a bet of Rs 10,000. Karthik consumed five bottles of neat liquor after a bet with his friends. Reportedly, he told his friends Venkata Reddy, Subramani and three others that he could drink five bottles of alcohol without diluting any water with it.
To this, one of his friends, Venkata Reddy, said that he would give him Rs 10,000 if he could chug down the bottles. However, what started as a game ended in tragedy as Karthik fell critically ill soon after consuming the liquor, reported NDTV.
The 21-year-old was then rushed to a hospital in Mulbagal in the state’s Kolar district but succumbed during treatment. Karthik who had gotten married a year back, leaves behind his eight-day-old child.
A police case has been registered at the Nangali Police Station against six individuals, including Venkata Reddy and Subramani. Both have been taken into custody, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining accused.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol consumption is responsible for approximately 2.6 million deaths annually, accounting for 4.7 per cent of all global fatalities. These deaths stem from various causes, including liver cirrhosis, cancers, and road accidents due to drunk driving
Hooch tragedies in the country
In addition to health-related deaths, India faces challenges with illicitly brewed alcohol, which can be lethal. For instance, in June 2024, a tragic incident in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district resulted in at least 65 deaths and over 200 hospitalizations due to methanol poisoning from illegally produced liquor.
Despite Bihar being a dry state, a total of 190 people have died due to consumption of illicit liquor in Bihar since prohibition was imposed in the state in April 2016, a senior Excise official said last month.
